Swim & Dive To Wrap Up Home Action

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State women's swimming and diving team will host Milwaukee and IUPUI with the men's swim and dive team this Friday, followed by a women's only meet Saturday against Miami. The event begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, followed by the women's Senior Day meet Saturday at 1 p.m. The senior recognition program will take place prior to the 1 p.m. start time Saturday afternoon.
Friday's competition marks the first action for Ball State since the co-ed meet against IUPUI and Xavier held Jan. 9. The lady Cards finished at 178-116 over Xavier and at 167-133 over IUPUI, while recording 23 top five finishes.
Four season bests were set throughout the 14 women's events. Ball State notched seven first place finishes, two apiece coming from senior Jordan VanWinkle, senior Carlena Magley, and freshman Amanda Kedzierski.
Magley finished in the top spot in back-to-back events with the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle with times of 24.22 and 52.85, respectively. In addition to her top finishes, she tallied two second place finishes in the 200 medley relay (1:48.39) with Kedzierski and the 400 free relay (3:34.68) with VanWinkle.
Kedzierski recorded her individual event wins in the 100 breaststroke at 1:05.50, and in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:25.56 time. VanWinkle notched her individual event wins with a 1:55.44 time in the 200 freestyle followed by a 5:10.04 finish in the 500 freestyle.
Sophomore Katie Horn rounded out the Ball State first place finishes with a 2:09.81 time in the 200 butterfly, while she was narrowly followed by freshman Traci Muszalski who clocked a 2:10.19 time in the event.
Junior diver Madie Zirzow took the top spot in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 261.38 and 253.73, while sophomore Quinn Bixler snagged the second place finish in the 3-meter dive with a score of 239.40, a new season best.
Most recently, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swim and dive team defeated the University of Chicago 200-98 at home, where the team's three seniors posted five first place finishes. Anna Yontz took the 50 free (23.78) and 100 free (52.68), while Sierra Townsend snagged the 100 fly (58.55). Final senior Kelly Theis combined with Yontz and Townsend to clench the top spot in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.20, and rounded out the meet with a first place finish in the 400 free at 3:33.82. The Panthers are 4-3 on the season, but are 0-2 on the road.
This will be the third time this season that the Cardinals are to face IUPUI. To open the season, Ball State finished second at the Indiana Intercollegiate with a score of 336.5, followed by the Jaguars who posted 309 and finished third out of ten schools in attendance. More recently, Ball State traveled to Indianapolis, Ind. to participate in the double dual meet with IUPUI and Xavier on Jan. 9, where the Cardinals defeated the Jaguars 167-133.
IUPUI has since taken down the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay 161.5-138.5 where three of their seniors, Alexus Laird, Jennifer Oleksiak and Natalie Trout posted top times on the night. They were joined by Madison Taylor and Alexis Bullard who racked up two wins apiece. Overall, IUPUI has tallied an 8-2 record on the season, including a 2-0 record while on the road.
To round out the home action, the lady Cardinals will take on Mid-American Conference foe Miami who most recently took down Buffalo 182.5-117.5, and holds the MAC Diver of the Week Jenna Karrow. The team has not lost a meet since they hosted Ohio State on Oct. 23. In competition with Buffalo, the RedHawks snagged the 200-yard medley relay, by Brittany Dudzinski, Stephanie LeMire, Gabby Veri and Annie Marquiss with a time of 1:45.24.
LeMire went on to win three other events on the day, while the 100-yard backstroke was swept by Miami, by the combination of Katie Bootsma (57.99), Dudzinski (58.06) and Michele Rielly (58.59). Rielly also took first place in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 2:03.53.
Looking ahead, the Ball State women's swim and dive team will complete Mid-American Conference action when they travel to Toledo on Saturday, Feb. 7.
