WILSON, N.C. - - The No. 16 Ball State (2-0) men's volleyball team continued their opening weekend of action with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-20) sweep at Barton College (0-1) Saturday afternoon.
Leading the Cardinals offensively was senior outside attack Matt Sutherland with nine kills on 13 attempts, five digs and five block assists. He was helped by junior setter Hiago Garchet, who posted 33 assists on 36 attempts, paired with five digs.
“It's nice to be 2-0, especially anytime we head out on the road,” Ball State men's volleyball head coach Joel Walton said. “And to come back with two victories that's a solid weekend performance.”
Offensively, freshman middle attack Matt Walsh posted four kills while serving up two aces and one solo block. Defensively, senior libero David Ryan Vander Meer notched 4 digs, while both junior Marcin Niemczewski and Walsh tallied three block assists.
“We had times of really solid play, along with many defensive blocks,” Coach Walton said. “Our offense ran at a really high efficiency two days in a row, highlighted by Sutherland's nine kills, while Niemczewski went .714. Defensively, Sutherland's five blocks really stood out.”
Ball State benefitted from 10 service errors committed by Barton paired with 22 attack errors.
The Cardinals held the advantage in kills (36-26), attack percentage (.475 – .054), digs (23-15) and blocks (19-4), but dropped in aces to the Bulldogs (5-7).
The Ball State men's volleyball team will open their home slate Friday, Jan. 16, when they host No. 3 Penn State at 7:30 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
