
Leonard and Smith Named To Academic All-MAC Team

MUNCIE, Ind. – Junior Ray Leonard and senior Austin Smith of the Ball State men's tennis team have been named to the 2014 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, which was announced Tuesday by the league office.
This is the second time Leonard has earned the the honor and the first for Smith. Smith was an honorable mention selection in 2013.
Leonard, a finanance major, owns a 3.72 GPA. He was named All-MAC First Team for the third straight season. Leonard helped the Cardinals claim their 22nd MAC title and automatic berth to the NCAA Championships after their 4-3 win over Buffalo in the league tournament. Leonard competed at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions ending the year with an overall dual match record of 10-14.
Smith recently graduated from Ball State in May with 3.56 GPA in biology. After helping the Cardinals win the 2014 MAC Tournament for the first time since 2011, Smith was named to the All-MAC Tournament team and was awarded the 2014 MAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player award. Smith ended the season with a 15-10 dual match mark and played at No. 1 doubles with Leonard.
Ball State ended its season at the 2014 NCAA Championships after suffering a 4-0 loss to No. 12 Illinois, May 6. Ball State has participated in the MAC for the last 33 years, claiming 38 regular season and or tournament championships. Since the MAC tournament format started in 1997, the Cardinals have won it seven times (1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2011 and 2014).
