WBB Loses Close MAC Game At Home To Eastern Michigan

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University women's basketball team (11-14, 6-8 MAC) lost a hard fought battle to Eastern Michigan (15-10, 5-9 MAC) Sunday afternoon in Worthen Arena by a score of 62-60.
For the game sophomore forward Nathalie Fontaine led the Cardinals with her fourth double-double of the season and ninth of her career. Fontaine scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Junior Shelbie Justice chipped in a 13 point performance while teammate Renee Bennett ended the day with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Brittany Carter opened the second half with a three pointer; the Cardinals would then quickly build a seven point advantage (49-42) over the Eagles after putting together a 13-6 run over the first 10 minutes of the half. Eastern Michigan would fight its way back with a 9-0 run of its own to take the 51-49 lead over Ball State with 8:11 left to play.
After both teams traded baskets over the course of the next three minutes, Desyree Thomas would knock down a three point basket for the Eagles at the 4:11 mark which would put Eastern Michigan up by three (57-54). Ball State would stay close to the Eagles, trailing by only one point (61-60) after a layup by Woody with 39 seconds remaining. The Cardinals were forced to foul the Eagles, Eastern Michigan would hit a free throw to seal the victory.
Eastern Michigan started the game off with a 20-10 run by the 10:56 mark in the first half. Ball State would then answer with a 5-0 run to cut the Eagles lead to five (20-15) at the 9:59 mark after back-to-back baskets from Justice and Fontaine.
After that, the Eagles continued to control the first half eventually building an 11-point (33-22) advantage over the Cardinals at the 4:41 mark. Ball State would end the half with a 7-0 run to only trail Eastern Michigan by three (36-33).
The Ball State women's basketball team continues Mid-American Conference action with a two-game road trip to Central Michigan (2/27) and Western Michigan (3/1). The game against the Chippewas will tipoff at 7 p.m. in McGuirk Arena, Thursday and the game Saturday versus the Broncos will tipoff at 2 p.m. in Read Fieldhouse.
