December 07, 2014 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Junior Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) won three events to help the Ball State track & field team open the indoor season with a strong showing at Saturday's Jerry England Alumni Open hosted by the University of Indianapolis at the Athletic Recreational Center (ARC).
Overall, Ball State head coach Randy Heisler, a 1984 graduate of UIndy, saw his Cardinals earn wins in eight of the non-scored meet's 16 events. Ball State's student-athletes also recorded 13 career-best efforts.
Crawford turned in a pair of the career-best efforts in winning the 60m dash (7.70) and 200m dash (26.28). Crawford was also able to defend her event title in the long jump with a winning leap of 5.76m / 18'-10.75”.
Another of Ball State's top performances came from senior Hannah Ciasto-Poor (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) who defended her event title in the pole vault by clearing a career-best height of 3.64m / 11'-11.25”. The mark is just 0.01m / 0.75” shy of the school record of 3.65m / 12'-0” set by Lauren McNichols in 2008.
Also defending their individual event titles were junior Danielle Dahl (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) in the 800m run (2:21.50) and junior Marie Lumpkin (Losantville, Ind./Union) in the weight throw (17.09m / 56'-1”).
Rounding out Ball State's event winners Saturday were sophomore Olivia Ashba (Ellettsville, Ind./Edgewood) in the 60m hurdles (9.35) and the 4x400m relay of sophomores Christa Hammond (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North), Kassidy Swenson (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso), Makelle Skelton (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) and freshman Gabby Sims (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) who combined to cross the finish line in 4:06.65.
