Swim & Dive Travel To Co-Ed Eastern Michigan Invite

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State women's swimming and diving team will compete along with the men's team in the Eastern Michigan Invitational this weekend. The first session of the event begins Friday at 3:30 p.m., followed by Saturday's events being held at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Jones Natatorium in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Ball State women's swim and dive has had a week off after it earned 13-of-21 event wins against Grand Valley State University in the 11th annual Douglas A. Coers Invitational, ultimately downing the Lakers 795.5-725.5. Senior Jordan VanWinkle recorded five first place event wins in addition to a second and third place finish throughout the two day event and was ultimately named Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week for the performance.
Divers Brittany Penn, Quinn Bixler and Taylor Fiew all recorded season and college career bests in the 1-meter dive Friday night, followed by Penn and Fiew notching the same in the 3-meter on Saturday afternoon. Junior diver Madie Zirzow earned an individual event win in the 1-meter with a score of 252.53, while placing second with a score of 257.18. All four are ranked in the Mid-American Conference top 16 in 3-meter dive going into the mid-season invitational.
The Cardinals clenched the 400 freestyle relay to round out the invitational by the combination of seniors VanWinkle, Elaine Pitsas, Carlena Magley and sophomore Jessica Extine for a finished 3:35.09. VanWinkle's other first place finishes included the 200 free (1:55.11), 400 medley relay (3:56.90), 500 free (5:09.00), and the 200 free relay (1:38.03).
Before their three week break, Eastern Michigan secured a 175.5-124.5 victory over the University of Cincinnati, Nov. 15, of which the brought them to a record of 4-1-1 (3-1 MAC). As a team, the Eagles claimed victories in 9-of-6 events, starting out with a dominant effort in the 200 medley relay.
Only one member of the Eastern Michigan women's swimming and diving team won multiple events on the afternoon. Monica Dorszewski was the top finisher in the 100 and 200 breast, finishing in 1:05.52 in the 100 breast before notching a season-best time of 2:20.02 in the 200 breast.
In the diving events, Lauren Dark and Becky Deacon each found a winning finish in the 1- and 3-meter dives. Dark recorded a personal best 312.90 points on the 1-meter to win the event, while Deacon also put up a career best in the 3-meter to secure her position with 323.63 points.
Looking ahead, the Ball State women's swimming and diving team will be back in action Friday, Jan. 9 when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to take on IUPUI and Xavier in co-ed competition.
