BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Ball State women's basketball team closed out its two-game road swing with an 84-59 loss at Western Kentucky Sunday afternoon at E.A. Diddle Arena.
With the loss the Cardinals fall to 4-6 on the season while the Hill Toppers improve their overall mark to 10-2.
Freshman Moriah Monaco led the Cardinals in scoring with 13 points while teammate sophomore Jill Morrison ended the day with 12 which included four baskets from behind the arc. Sophomore Renee Bennett led the team defensively with five rebounds and added 11 points.
For only the third time in 10 games, the Cardinals did not out shoot their opponent. Western Kentucky, who leads Conference USA shooting, shot 57.4 percent from the field while Ball State struggled from the floor after a 36.7 shooting performance.
Western Kentucky took the early 2-0 lead over Ball State in the opening minutes of the ball game. Jill Morrison would knock down a three-point basket on the other end of the court to give the Cardinals the 3-2 edge over the Hill Toppers with just a minute shaved off the clock.
After that, both teams traded baskets for the next two minutes, until Western Kentucky went on a 25-4 scoring spree which put the Hill Toppers up by 18 (27-7) with 10:23 remaining in the first half. Monaco finally broke the Cardinals dry spell at the 10:19 mark after knocking down two free throws.
Western Kentucky continued to remain hot from the floor, eventually building its largest lead of the half, a 26-point (37-11) cushion with 7:42 remaining. The Cardinals closed out the half with a 16-9 run to make it a 19-point (46-27) ball game at intermission.
Morrison hit back-to-back three pointers to start out the second half while teammate Nathalie Fontaine made a layup and some free throws to bring Ball State within 14 (36-52) with 15:15 to play but that was as close as the Cardinals would get the remainder of the contest.
The Ball State women's basketball team will close out non-conference action when it travels to Saint Louis, Dec. 30 for an 8 p.m. (EST) tipoff in Chaifetz Arena.
