WBB Eclipses 100 Point Mark In Exhibition Win
November 05, 2014 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. – For the second straight season, the Ball State women's basketball team eclipsed the 100-point mark in its 116-29 exhibition game victory over Oakland City Tuesday night in Worthen Arena.
"I think top to bottom, everybody played good," Ball State head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee said. "We had positive contributions out of everybody. To see four double-doubles, we really talked about wanting to rebound the ball the way we did."
Six women's basketball players finished with double figures, led by sophomore center Renee Bennett with 23 points. Sophomore guard Jill Morrison was the second leading scorer behind Bennett with 19 points, while teammate junior forward Nathalie Fontaine finished the night with 18. Sophomore guard Calyn Hosea chipped in 15 points, while teammates -- sophomore guard Shelby Merder and newcomer Moriah Monaco -- had 13 apiece.
Defensively the Cardinals held the Lady Oaks to an 18.2 shooting percentage, while Ball State shot 54.4 percent from the field. Four Cardinals pulled down double digit rebounds with Bennett and Monaco leading the way with 13 apiece while teammates Hosea and Merder ended the night with 10 respectively.
The Cardinals set the pace early in the first half after opening the game with an 11-0 run, which was sparked by baskets from Fontaine, Morrison, Bennett and Justice with just three minutes shaved off the clock. The Ball State scoring spree eventually led the Cardinals to a 68-12 halftime advantage over Oakland City. At intermission, eight of the nine Cardinals had already scored with Morrison leading the way with 16 points off of 6-of-9 shooting from the field.
Ball State hosts Big Ten foe Purdue for its 2014-15 season and home opener, Nov. 14, in Worthen Arena at 7 p.m. This marks the first time the Cardinals have hosted a Big Ten opponent to start the season since 2010-11 when Ball State hosted Indiana. It also marks the second straight year the Cardinals have opened the season against the Boilermakers.
