Swim & Dive Hosts 11th Annual Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State women's swimming and diving team will compete along with the men's team in the 11th annual Doug Coers Invitational against Grand Valley State University this weekend. Session one of the event begins Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a team poster signing for fans. Saturday's session two will open with swimming at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., followed by diving at 1 p.m. at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
Ball State women's swim and dive has had a week off after it took down Eastern Illinois in their first co-ed meet of the season. The Cardinals dominated by earning 9-of-14 event wins throughout the meet, ultimately posting a score of 165-97.
Ball State swept two events including the 200 freestyle by Hannah Cressman,Traci Muszalski and Leighann Mattson and also the 500 freestyle by Mattson, Amanda Kedzierski and Muszalski.
Kedzierski then combined with Carlena Magley, Elaine Pitsas and Jessica Extine to capture a first place finish in the 200 free relay event. Magley also went on to cinch first in the 1000 free at 11:02.58, closely followed by teammate Kimberly Scott who posted an 11:02.68 time in the event. Magley rounded out her individual events by registering a 1:03.21 finish for third in the 100 fly.
Other Cardinal success included senior Jordan VanWinkle who recorded three event wins. VanWinkle tallied two top individual finishes in both the 200 IM at a 2:11.09, and in the 200 breast with a time of 2:31.60. She rounded out her event wins by combining with Andrea Richter, Sydney Harris and Katie Horn in the 200 medley relay for a registered finish of 1:51.91.
Grand Valley State women's swimming and diving team is currently 6-2 on the season. Most recently, the Lakers competed at the Northern Michigan Invite, claiming victory over both NMU with a score of 157-143 and over St. Cloud State University 174-126.
The Laker women won seven events, highlighted by freshman Sam Postmus winning three individual events (1000 free, 500 free and 200 IM) and junior Taylor Wiercinski winning both diving events. Other strong swimmers for Grand Valley include Sarah Roesner who won the 100 free and Olivia Schultz who won the 200 back.
Last year at the 10th annual Doug Coers Invitational, the Cardinal women won the event with a team score of 847, beating out Grand Valley State and University of Findlay who were in attendance. Ball State captured 15 individual event wins and three relay wins over the weekend.
Looking ahead, the Ball State women's swimming and diving team will be back in action Friday, Dec. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 6 when they travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. for the co-ed Eastern Michigan Invitational.
