Women?s Swim & Dive Captures Second At Season Opener

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Ball State women's swimming and diving team kicked off the 2014 season with action Saturday afternoon at the Indiana Intercollegiate hosted by Purdue. The Cardinals had a strong showing while placing second with a score of 336.5 amongst the 11 teams.
“This meet was a great way for us to start off the season,” Ball State women's swimming and diving coach Kristy Castillo said. “We were able to incorporate our training techniques into our races and executed well.”
Ball State tallied ten top-five finishes with freshman Amanda Kedzierski cinching the top spot in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.44. Senior Carlena Magley placed second in the 100 free, clocking a 52.86 in addition to placing fourth in the 50 free with a 24.13.
Magley combined with teammates Courtney Mudd, Katie Horn and Kedzierski with a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay at 1:48.57. Senior Elaine Pitsas did the same with teammates Jessica Extine, Jordan VanWinkle and Traci Muszalski for a solid third place finish in the 200 free relay at 1:39.17.
In addition to the team relay success, VanWinkle also captured fourth in the 500 free with 5:06.99, shaving three seconds off of her seed time and registered sixth of 47 in the 200 free at 1:54.85.
“Our divers also performed well and showed consistency,” Coach Castillo went on. Junior diver Madie Zirzow finished third in the three meter dive while posting a 230.65 and fourth in the one meter dive at 242.35.
