Ball State Football Quick Hits
Ball State suffered a 42-38 loss at home to Western Michigan Saturday . . . It marked only the third loss for the Cardinals in the past 15 Mid-American Conference games.
Ball State ranks 23rd in the nation in red zone defense, having allowed opponents to score on only 73.1 percent of trips inside the 20-yard line, including a touchdown in only 15-of-26 trips in the red zone . . . The Cardinals limited Big Ten Conference foe Iowa to only three scores in the Hawkeyes' six trips inside the red zone.
The Cardinals rank 21st in the nation for fewest penalties (29), 19th in the nation in fewest penalties per game (4.8), 30th nationally for fewest penalty yards (274) and 27th in the NCAA for fewest penalty yards per game (45.7).
Ball State is 17-7 in its last 24 regular season games and competed in the GoDaddy Bowl after the 2013 season to mark back-to-back bowl appearances for only the second time in the school's history . . . The only other time Ball State has played in back-to-back bowls was after the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Jack Milas made his first collegiate appearance and passed for 326 yards and four touchdowns against Western Michigan . . . The four TD passes matched the most ever by a Ball State quarterback in his starting debut . . . Nate Davis was the most recent to accomplish the feat when he did it against Northern Illinois in 2006 . . . Davis had appeared off the bench in the previous four games and replaced current offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and former Ball State quarterback Joey Lynch in the starting lineup in 2006.
Jack Milas became only the seventh quarterback in the Football Bowl Subdivision since 2010 to complete at least 20 passes for more than 300 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in their first career start . . . The 326 yards passing by Milas in the Western Michigan game marked the most ever by a Ball State freshman in a single game.
Senior running back Jahwan Edwards rushed for 77 yards vs. Western Michigan and now has 3,915 career rushing yards . . . He needs 88 yards to become Ball State's career leader and move past Marcus Merriweather, who ranks first on the list after compiling 4,002 rushing yards from 1999-2002.
Jahwan Edwards scored his 44th career touchdown vs. Western Michigan to extend his own school records for touchdowns in a career and rushing TDs in a career.
Junior wide receiver Jordan Williams had 11 catches for a career best 179 yards with two touchdowns vs. Western Michigan . . . The two TD grabs tied his career high, while the 179 receiving yards were the 13th most in a single game in school history . . . Williams moved into ninth on Ball State's career list for TD receptions with 13 and moved into a tie for fifth with his fifth career 100-yard receiving game.
Ball State's seven MAC wins last season marks only the fifth time since joining the league in 1975 the Cardinals have tallied at least seven wins in the MAC . . . The Cardinals were 8-0 in 1978 and 2008, 7-0-1 in 1993 and 7-1 in 1996.
