TOLEDO, Ohio - The Ball State men's tennis team opened Mid-American Conference action with a 5-2 road win at Toledo Saturday afternoon. With the win the Cardinals improve to 11-6 on the season and 1-0 in league action.
“We are happy to get a road win in our first conference match,” said Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards. “I thought our guys showed a lot of poise and toughness to come through in some tight situations. Toledo has had some good wins this year so we had to have a solid performance to get the job done.”
Ball State edged ahead of Toledo 1-0 after taking two out of three doubles matches to win the first point. At No. 1 doubles Ray Leonard and Patrick Elliott won an exciting 9-8 (7-2) match over Tomas Stillman and Nicholas Wong. Alexandre Brym paired up with Imanol Arconada to take down Bryant Dudzick and Ryan Jorgensen at the No. 3 spot.
The Cardinals went on to win four of the six singles matches to earn the victory over the Rockets. Morrison won in straight sets over Grant Adams at the No. 2 position. Elliott and Austin Smith also earned straight set defeats over Toledo in their respective positions. At No. 4 singles, Alexandre Brym dropped his second set to Wong but came back in the third set 10-8 for the victory.
The Ball State men's tennis team will take a break from Mid-American Conference action and will host Notre Dame Monday at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
