
Outdoor T&F Defeats Bowling Green on Senior Day

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State outdoor track & field team defeated Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green, 121-36, Saturday at University Track in the Cardinals' first home outdoor meet since March 29, 2003.
Against the Falcons, head coach Randy Heisler and the Cardinals celebrated Senior Day with seniors Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany), Madeline Goheen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) and Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central).
Lorenz led the Cardinals with four event wins in the 100m hurdles (15.03), the 400m hurdles (1:04.86), the long jump (19-3.50) and javelin throw (110-7/33.52m), in addition to combining with Jordan McMillan (Portland, Ind./Jay County), Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) and Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) on the first-place 4x100m relay (47.20).
In the sprint events, Taylor tallied victories in the 100m dash (12.13) and 200m dash (25.67) and Talhelm won the 800m run (2:16.28), while junior MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) added a victory in the 1500m run (4:46.56) and junior Allison Blanck (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) won the 5000m run (18:44.08).
In the 3000m steeplechase, freshmen Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) and Caitlynn Edon posted a 1-2 finish with times of 11:29.45 and 11:53.02, respectively.
In the field events, Lomax tallied a leap of 5-5.25 for first place in the high jump, freshman Hannah Ciasto-Poor (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) placed first in the pole vault (10-8.75/3.27m) and junior Alyssa Hurlburt (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) added a first-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 34-1.25.
Additional top performances for the Cardinals include victories in the shot put (40-9.50/12.43m) and discus throw (146-5/44.63m) by junior Melissa Dodaro (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) and Lywanna Melvin's (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green) win in the hammer throw (134-1/40.88m).
The outdoor track & field squad returns to action next Saturday and Sunday in the Polytan Invitational at Bloomington, Ind.
