BSU Divers Return to Zone Diving C Meet for 3-Meter

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Seniors Whitney Adams and Christina Riordan of the Ball State women's swimming and diving team are still looking to earn NCAA spots after day one of the NCAA Zone Diving C Championships Thursday at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Riordan, a native of Homewood, Ill., continued her stellar performance from the Mid-American Conference Championships after posting a third-place score of 294.75 on the 3-meter board semifinals in Akron, Ohio. The duo of Riordan and Adams also placed 14th and 15th at the league meet on the 1-meter board with scores of 249.20 and 245.45, respectively.
Thursday in the 1-meter preliminaries, Riordan put up a number of 242.80 (27th-place), while Adams, a native of Danville, Ind., posted a score of 222.60 (45th-place), however the pair did not finish high enough to qualify for the final segment.
The 2012 three-day meet (Thursday-Saturday) features divers from the states of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois and Ohio, where seven women will qualify for the women's championship March 15-17 in Auburn, Ala.
Divers qualify based on their finishes in the three events as the platform winner, 3-meter winner and 1-meter winner earn the top-three spots. The 3-meter runner-up claims the fourth spot, the 1-meter runner-up will be fifth, the 3-meter third-place finisher gets spot No. 6 and the third-place finisher on the 1-meter gets the No. 7 slot.
Action continues Friday at 1 p.m. with the women's 3-meter event, with four spots remaining after Ohio State's Bianca Alvarez, Notre Dame's Jennifer Chiang and Eastern Michigan's Kelly Hendricks picked up three qualifying spots. Competition concludes March 10 with the platform event.
