Football Defeats Ohio 52-27 at Home in MAC Action
November 15, 2012 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State football team (8-3, 5-2 MAC) earned a 52-27 Mid-American Conference victory over the Ohio Bobcats (8-3, 4-3 MAC) Wednesday night at Scheumann Stadium.
The Cardinals ran their winning streak to five games as they racked up their most points in a game since a 2006 contest against Buffalo and produced the fifth most yards in school history with 588.
Jahwan Edwards rushed for 169 yards and Horactio Banks added a career-high 135 on the ground, marking the first time two Ball State running backs topped 100 yards in the same game since 2009. Edwards has now rushed for 100 yards in five straight games, which is one shy of the school record.
Fifth-year senior quarterback Kelly Page came in for an injured Keith Wenning late in the second quarter and led Ball State to a win on Senior Night. In his first action of the season and his final game at Scheumann Stadium, Page threw for two touchdowns and ran for one.
The Cardinals owned the second half despite Beau Blankenship scoring on the Bobcats first possession in the opening minutes of the third quarter to give Ohio a 24-21 lead. The momentum shifted on Ball State's ensuing drive when Page followed a 68-yard Edwards run with a 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Zane Fakes to put the Cardinals back on top.
Senior Steven Schott increased Ball State's lead to 31-24 after nailing a 38-yard field goal with 1:52 left in the third quarter.
The Cardinals carried their third quarter momentum into the fourth quarter, adding three more touchdowns. Edwards and Banks each ran for one, and Fakes caught his second score of the night from Page.
Ball State's defense held the Bobcats to only a field goal after their touchdown to open the second half. Sophomore cornerback Eric Patterson and senior linebacker Travis Freeman led the Cardinals with 10 tackles apiece, while the Ball State defense matched its season high with four sacks.
The first half saw five lead changes with the teams going back and forth. Kevonn Mabon and Willie Snead each caught touchdown passes from Wenning, and Page scored his rushing touchdown on the Cardinals' final possession of the half to give Ball State a 21-17 lead at the break.
Blankenship ran for two first-half touchdowns for Ohio. He led the Bobcats offensively with 161 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.
With the victory, Ball State reached eight wins for the 11th time in school history and the first time since its undefeated regular season in 2008. The five MAC wins are also the most for the Cardinals since the 2008 season.
Ball State will close out the regular season Nov. 23 with a trip to Miami University for a 1 p.m. kickoff in Oxford, Ohio.
