CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Ball State soccer team suffered a hard-fought 1-0 loss at regional foe Xavier Sunday afternoon, despite out-shooting the Musketeers 22-8, including 15-2 in the second half. The loss drops the Cardinals to 2-3-0 on the season while Xavier improves to 3-2-0 on the year.
Xavier scored the game's lone goal in the 24th minute of play. Jessica Brooks was the recipient of a passing combination into the 18-yard box where she was able to fire a shot past junior goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler (Waukesha, Wis./UT-Martin) from eight yards out to give the Musketeers the early lead. The two teams battled evenly in the first half with the Cardinals holding a slight 7-6 edge in shots.
Ball State dominated play in the second half as it peppered Xavier with 15 shots in the frame but could not find the equalizer. Freshman midfielder Becca Sutton (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) was the catalyst in the offensive attack as she posted five second half shots, but could not beat Xavier goalkeeper Katie Markesberry who posted the shutout by notching 10 saves in the victory.
Buehler was charged with her second loss of the year as she allowed just one goal in 90 minutes of play while making four saves. Sutton finished with a game-high six shots while forward Paige Stroinski (Granger, Ind./Penn) and defender Skylar Chew (Mason, Ohio/Mason) each posted three shots in the loss.
Ball State continues its four-game road stretch next weekend as it travels to Flagstaff, Ariz., to take part in the NIU High Altitude Tournament. The Cardinals will play host Northern Arizona Friday and Lamar Sunday in the Tournament.
