September 10, 2011 | Soccer
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Ball State soccer team posted a 2-2 tie against hosting Northern Arizona Friday night at the Hilton Garden Inn High Altitude Tournament, despite out-shooting the Lumberjacks 22-13 in the contest. The two teams combined for four goals in the first 17:48 of the game but played the final 92:12 without a goal.
Ball State (2-3-1) controlled the tempo of the game as it held a 14-3 edge in shots on goal, but could not find the go ahead goal in the final 90-plus minutes. Northern Arizona was kept in the game as reserve goalkeeper Lauren Weaver came on after the early scoring flurry and posted 11 saves in the final 92:12 of the game.
Ball State opened the scoring early as it found the back of the net in the seventh minute of action. The Cardinals were pressing the NAU goal and freshman forward Hannah Chadick (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) pounced on a loose ball in the box. She buried the shot past Lumberjack goalkeeper Natasha Slaughter for the 1-0 lead. The goal was the first of Chadick's collegiate career and she is the sixth Cardinal to tally a goal this season.
Northern Arizona responded back in the ninth minute of action as it took advantage of a free kick. Sam Monahan struck the free kick from 20-yards out past junior goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler (Waukesha, Wis./UT-Martin) for her team-leading third goal of the year.
Ball State came right back in the 14th minute to retake the lead as once again its pressure led to the tally. The Cardinals were awarded a corner kick after attacking the NAU goal. Junior defender Amanda Dreyfus (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) lofted the corner kick into the box where it found the head of junior Brigit Reder (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) who buried it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
The Lumberjacks kept the offensive first half going as they tied the game at 2-2 in the 18th minute. Kathryn Wertz sent a through ball behind the BSU defense where she found Jenna Samora who beat Buehler in the top corner to tie the game once again.
The two teams settled in with no further goals in regulation to force the Cardinals' second overtime contest of the season. Chadick and freshman midfielder Becca Sutton (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) paced the Cardinals with four shots apiece in the game while freshman Pavla Benyrova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Prague 9) added three shots, all of which came in the overtime periods.
Despite the Ball State dominance in scoring chances, Northern Arizona was primed to claim the victory in the 105th minute of action as it was awarded a penalty kick after a BSU foul in the box. Monahan stepped up for the Lumberjacks and took the penalty kick but her try was thwarted by Buehler to keep the game tied at 2-2. The save by Buehler was her only save of the night but came with the game on the line at the 104:29 mark.
The Cardinals will wrap up their weekend in the Hilton Garden Inn High Altitude Tournament Sunday morning when they face off against Lamar at 10 a.m. (PT).
