MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State softball team split a doubleheader with Mid-American Conference opponent Western Michigan Friday afternoon at the BSU Softball Complex.
The Cardinals fell to the Broncos, 11-10, in the first game, then went on to defeat their opponent, 12-4, in six innings in the second contest.
In the first game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, freshman first baseman Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) drew a walk off Western Michigan pitcher Meredith Whitney.
Then, an illegal pitch advanced all runners, scoring senior shortstop Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City), who got on base after drawing a walk.
The Broncos put up a run in the top of the second as Houston homered to left center field.
The Cardinals returned in the bottom of the inning with five runs as Barkley led the squad with a double to left center field, driving in senior right fielder Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon).
Freshman designated hitter Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) then hit a three-run home run to right field, scoring Barkley and junior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde), who got on base after drawing a walk.
Sophomore left fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) followed with a home run to center field to put the Cardinals up 7-1.
Western Michigan added runs in the top of the third, fourth and fifth innings to go up 11-7 over Ball State.
The Cardinals narrowed the gap in the bottom of the fifth as Collins singled through the right side with the bases loaded, scoring Julie Cortez (Colorado, Springs, Colo./Chaparrel), pinch running for senior third baseman Kate Wilczynski (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro), who drew a walk off Whitney.
Then, Barkley's sac fly out to center field drove in senior center fielder Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Daytona Beach CC). Rozanski followed with a double to left center field in the bottom of the sixth to drive in Carpenter, who drew a walk and ended the scoring for the game.
Junior pitcher Kim Mazzapica (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) dropped to 7-2 on the season with the loss for the Cardinals. After 3.2 innings of work, Mazzapica gave up three runs off eight hits, while striking out three batters.
In game two, Ball State outhit Western Michigan, 15-9, in six innings. The Broncos were the first to the scoreboard in the first inning as Whitney and Lexi Jager both hit a home run to give WMU an early 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals returned the favor in the bottom of the first, tying the game, 2-2, as Montalto homered to center field, scoring Collins, who got on base with a single to third.
Ball State continued its hot hitting in the third and fourth inning after Gilbert led the team with a home run to left field, driving in Rager, who got on base with a single to left center field. Carpenter added another run off a Western Michigan error before the end of the inning, putting the Cardinals up, 5-2.
In the fourth with one out, Gilbert singled and a Broncos error in center field allowed her to reach third and score Montalto, who was hit by a pitch, and Cortez, pinch running for Rager, who got on base with a single to left field.
Western Michigan returned in the top of the fifth as Gracie Barstad's double to center field scored Tara Buchanan. Then, Courtney Rousseau's sac fly out to left field brought home Barstad.
The Cardinals added three more in the sixth, securing the run rule to win the game, 12-4. Rager was patient at the plate, advancing to first on a walk, and Gilbert homered to center field to drive in Rager.
The home run marked Gilbert's 13th on the season, breaking Ball State's single season home run record, previously held by Jen Reifschneider in 2009 (11).
Then Collins singled up the middle, scoring sophomore Hannah Zimmerman (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial), pinch running for Wilczynski, who reached on a fielder's choice.
Credited with the win, Mazzapica improved to 8-2 on the mound after 5.0 innings of work, allowing nine hits and striking out one Broncos batter, while walking three.
Ball State Softball returns to the field Saturday and Sunday with matchups versus Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m.
Ball State's seniors - Barkley, Collins, Rozanski, Kristy Stratton (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw) and Wilczynski - will be recognized Sunday, which has been designated Senior Day at the park.
