Softball Secures Red Hot Victory at Miami

OXFORD, Ohio - Ball State Softball improved to 23-14 on the season and 4-1 in Mid-American Conference play after defeating Miami (16-14, 2-3), 5-3, Saturday afternoon at the MU Softball Stadium.
The RedHawks put a run on the board early in the bottom of the first after Miami's Allie Larrabee singled and brought home Meghan Mawn to end the inning.
Then, in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded, a wild pitched advanced all the runners and scored Mawn, and Miami added its third run after Kayla Ledbetter scored off a sacrifice fly to right field from Jessica Simpson.
Ball State answered back in the top of the sixth as freshman first baseman Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) drew a walk, followed by a double to left center field from sophomore left fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana).
Freshman Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) then brought senior Kristy Stratton (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw) home, who was pinch running for Rager, off an RBI-ground out.
Ball State added four runs in the top of the seventh after Gilbert hit her first career grand-slam, bringing home senior shortstop Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City) and senior right fielder Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon), who both reached on fielding errors, and Rager, who drew a walk, to put the Cardinals up 5-3 against the RedHawks. The home run marked Gilbert's seventh of the season.
Gilbert led the Cardinals offensively after going 1-for-3 at the plate with five RBI. Junior pitcher Kim Mazzapica (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) improved to 4-1 on the season with the win after 4.2 innings of work, allowing one hit.
The Ball State softball team continues MAC action Sunday at 1 p.m. and will come back to the BSU Softball Complex for a home contest with Wright State Tuesday at 3 p.m.
