Softball Falls to Bowling Green, 7-6, in 12 Innings

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Ball State Softball fell to 32-18 on the season and 12-4 in Mid-American Conference play after dropping a 7-6 contest to Bowling Green Saturday afternoon in 12 innings at Meserve Field. With the win, the Falcons improved to 8-31 overall and 2-14 in league action.
Freshman designated hitter Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) led the Cardinals in the top of the second after she hit a two-run home run to right field, scoring freshman first baseman Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern), who got on base after a single through the right side.
Junior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) started the top of the third off with a homer to center field, driving in senior right fielder Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon), who got on base with a single to second.
Then, Rager singled to left field and sophomore left fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) brought her home with a triple to center field, putting the Cardinals up, 5-0.
The Falcons answered back in the bottom of the third as Erika Stratton homered to left field.
Then, Bowling Green added two more runs to the board in the fourth after Melissa Wests' sac bunt scored Paige Berger and Katie Yoho scored after an error at first base.
The Falcons closed the gap in the bottom of the fifth after Andrea Arney's single to shortstop brought home Hannah Fulk, who got on base after a single to center field.
Then, Bowling Green evened the score, 5-5, in the sixth inning as Stratton homered to left field.
In extra innings, junior second baseman Alison Mercado (Perris, Calif./Arizona Western) singled to shortstop to score Carpenter, who reached on a throwing error by Bowling Green's pitcher Melissa Bott.
However, the Falcons leveled the field again as Lindsay Arney singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw, scoring Jenny Kelley on the play.
Stratton would then hit her third home run of the day in the bottom of the 12th inning, making it a 7-6 ball game, in favor of Bowling Green.
Sophomore pitcher Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) suffered the loss for Ball State on the mound after 7.2 innings of work.
The pre-medicine major gave up three runs while striking out three batters, falling to 17-11 on the season.
The Ball State softball team continues MAC action versus the Falcons Sunday. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
