Softball Defeats ETSU to Close Under Armour Invitational

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ball State advanced to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in tournament action with a 5-0 shutout of East Tennessee State on the final day of the Under Armour Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
Ball State outhit ETSU, 9-4, and committed no errors in the contest compared to the Lady Buccaneers' one. The Cardinals opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning after freshman Jennifer Gilbert's (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) RBI-double to left center advanced senior right fielder Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) to third base and sent senior shortstop Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City) around to score.
Then, sophomore left fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) reached on an error by ETSU's right fielder Marlina DeLisa and Collins came around to home plate.
The Cardinals came back in the top of the sixth inning after freshman third baseman Audrey Bickel's (Munster, Ind./Andrean) RBI-doubled to center field drove in Carpenter and Collins to score for Ball State.
In the seventh inning, Collins' RBI-single to center field scored junior second baseman Alison Mercado (Perris, Calif/Arizona Western) to secure the final run of the contest and the shutout victory for Ball State.
Collins went 2-for-4 on the day while sophomore pitcher Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) pitched all seven innings while allowing four hits, two walks and striking out six.
On the slate next for the squad is a contest versus the Dutch National Team Monday at 8 p.m. in Clearwater, Fla. Head coach Craig Nicholson and the team open the home portion of the 2011 season in a doubleheader versus Dayton at the BSU Softball Complex, beginning at 3 p.m. on March 24.
