March 20, 2011 | Softball
BOTETOURT, Va. - The Ball State Softball team took a 6-2 contest from Robert Morris Sunday morning at the Botetourt Sports Complex to close the Radford Invitational. With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 15-11 overall and earned a 4-1 tally in tournament play.
Ball State outhit its opponent, 8-6, and the squad committed one error versus their opponents' three. Robert Morris scored its two runs after getting off to a quick start in the top of the first inning, then Ball State returned the favor in the bottom of the first.
Senior center fielder Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) reached first base after a single to shortstop, advanced to second and third base on a wild pitch and passed ball, and finally scored after senior right fielder Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) bunted to Robert Morris' pitcher.
Sophomore left fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) then drove Collins in on a base-hit to left field and Carpenter scored after junior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) singled up the middle.
The Cardinals came back in the bottom of the second inning as a Collins RBI-ground out to second base scored Rozanski. Then in the bottom of the third, freshman first baseman Taylor Rager's (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) RBI-sac fly out to right field advanced Montalto to third base to score Carpenter.
Returning in the bottom of the fifth inning, Montalto whacked a triple, her first of the season, to right center field to drive in Carpenter and score Ball State's sixth and final run of the contest.
Montalto paced all Ball State batters at the plate, with three hits in three appearances, while Rozanski and Carpenter went 2-for-4 and 2-for-2, respectively. With the win, sophomore hurler Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) improved to 9-6 on the season after allowing for six hits and two walks in seven innings, while striking out four.
Head coach Craig Nicholson and the team open the home portion of the 2011 schedule in a doubleheader versus Dayton at the BSU Softball Complex, beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 24.
