March 14, 2011 | Softball
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ball State Softball fell 7-3 to St. Joseph's in their final contest of the Under Armour Showcase at the Eddie C. Moore Complex, earning a 0-5 mark in tournament play and an 11-10 record on the young season.
The Hawks outhit the Cardinals 12-10, however Ball State put a run on the board early in the top of the first inning as freshman Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) drove home senior center fielder Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) on a base-hit to second.
The Cardinals came back to score in the top of the sixth inning as sophomore left fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) clubbed a base-hit down the right side to drive in senior right fielder Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon). Then with the bases loaded, the Hawk's pitcher Taryn Ashway walked junior second baseman Alison Mercado (Perris, Calif./Arizona Western) to score Ball State's third and final run of the contest.
Overall, Gilbert had a phenomenal day for the Cardinals, batting 2-for-4, in addition to tallying her RBI. Collins also recorded two hits in four appearances and joined senior shortstop Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City) and Gilbert with one stolen base apiece.
Junior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) also went 1-for-2 at the plate, coming in as a pinch hitter for sophomore catcher Sadie Robertson (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) in the top of the fifth inning. Montalto, a physical education major, smacked a double to left field, her sixth of the season, and advanced to third but was left on base.
Pitchers Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) and Kim Mazzapica (Pam Harbor, Fla./East Lake) split six innings in the circle as the duo allowed for twelve hits, in addition to walking none of Hawks batters and striking out three.
Ball State will return to action Friday at the Radford Tournament in Troutville, Va., against Delaware at 1 p.m. Head coach Craig Nicholson and the team open the home portion of the 2011 season in a doubleheader versus Dayton at the BSU Softball Complex, beginning at 3 p.m. on March 24.
