
WBB Suffers 78-65 loss at Akron

Despite putting three players in double figures and getting 30 points off the bench, Ball State's women's basketball team suffered a 78-65 loss at Akron Saturday evening.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 9-15 overall and 4-7 in Mid-American Conference action. The Zips improved to 11-12 overall and 4-7 in league play.
Emily Maggert led Ball State with 16 points, while Ty'Ronda Benning added 12 and Ebony Jackson scored 11. Jackson's 11 points off the bench, combined with nine from Suzanne Grossnickle helped keep Ball State in the contest.
After falling behind 41-28 at the half, the Cardinals played Akron even in the second half, but could connect on only 42 percent of their field goals and committed 22 turnovers in the defeat.
Akron maintained a double digit lead till Brandy Woody hit a three pointer with 12:20 to play in the game to bring Ball State within nine at 53-44. The Cardinals would get it down to a six point Zips edge with 10:16 remaining on a Shanee' Jackson layup and then again at the 9:44 mark when Ty'Ronda Benning's jumper made it 59-53.
However, Akron would get the lead back to double figures to stay with a free throw at the 6:42 mark that gave the Zips a 65-55 lead.
Ball State would get no closer the remainder of the game and Akron would take its largest lead of the contest at the 2:26 mark when the Zips led 77-58.
Akron was led by the 26 points by Taylor Ruper, who tallied 20 points in the first half on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, including connecting on 6-of-8 from the three point arc.
Ball State will host Eastern Michigan Wednesday at 7 p.m., and then host Toledo Saturday at 1 p.m.
