No. 15 MVB Tops Star-Studded Alumni Team

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Battling a star-studded alumni group featuring four former All-Americans, the 15th-ranked Ball State men's volleyball team used a complete team effort to score a 4-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-20) victory in a predetermined five set match Saturday evening at Worthen Arena.
In all, 15 BSU players saw action in the contest, with sophomore Greg Herceg (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius H.S.) pacing the active Cardinals with nine kills. Redshirt freshman Derek Menendez (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.) added eight markers, while senior Lee Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller H.S.) blasted seven.
Even Berg, a four-year letterwinner from 2003-06, paced the alumni offense with 11 kills, while 2004 AVCA All-America Second Team setter Keith Schunzel handed out a match-high 26 assists and led the alumni to their second-set victory.
Overall, 20 different players saw action on the alumni squad, with Schunzel, Berg, 2006 Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Todd Reimer, 2002 AVCA All-America First Team selection Paul Fasshauer, 2007 AVCA All-America Second Team honoree Ian Peckler, 2001 letterwinner Brian Winchester, 2007-10 letterwinner Eric Schulte, 2004-06 letterwinner Zoran Grabovac and 2007-10 letterwinner Matt Sprague combining in the alumni's only set victory.
The No. 15 Ball State men's volleyball team continues its 2011 season Thursday (Jan. 13), when it opens play in the 17th Annual Outrigger Invitational with a 7 p.m. (Hawai'i time) first-serve versus tournament host No. 6 Hawai'i.
