Track & Field Wins 10 Events @ IWU Invitational

MARION, Ind. - - The Ball State indoor track and field team turned in a dominating performance at the IWU Invitational Saturday afternoon, scoring wins in 10 of the 20 events in the meet hosted by Indiana Wesleyan at the IWU Indoor Sports Complex. The Cardinals won the meet with 203 points, out-distancing second-place finisher and league rival Northern Illinois (141).
In the sprint events, sophomore Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) captured the top spot in the 400m dash with a time of 58.57. Smith was also a member of a pair of first-place relays.
Also in the sprints, junior Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) placed second in both the 60m dash (7.76) and the 200m dash (25.74). Senior Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) added a victory in the 60m hurdles.
In the mid-distance events, junior Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) posted a victory in the 800m run (2:20.15), while sophomore MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) placed second in the mile (5:17.76).
The Cardinals swept the two distance races, with senior Ali Bishel (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) capturing the top spot in the 3,000m run (10:22.63) and redshirt sophomore Madeline Goheen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger H.S.) placing first in the 5,000m run (18:53.69). Goheen also turned in a time of 11:07.51 to place fifth in the 3,000m run.
In the relay events, BSU claimed victory in 4x400m and distance medley, while placing second in both the 4x200m and 4x800m.
Freshman Hannah Lange (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville H.S.), Taylor, senior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) and Smith combined for a time of 4:01.39 to win the 4x400m relay.
Mellen, sophomore Emilee Zets (Berlin Center, Ohio/West Branch H.S.), Smith and Bishel posted a first-place time of 12:26.97 in the DMR.
In the field events, Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport H.S.) continued her stellar freshman campaign with a first-place and career-best high jump of 5-8.75. Lomax also placed fourth in the 200m dash (26.76) and sixth in the 60m hurdles (9.48).
Lorenz added a victory in the long jump (18-4.25) to her 4x400m relay victory. She would also place third in the 60m hurdles (9.19) and fourth in the high jump (5-1.75).
BSU's other event win came in the triple jump, with senior Megan Cherry (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) turning in a first-place distance of 34-10.5.
Ball State continues its indoor season next weekend when it travels to Notre Dame for the two-day Meyo Invitational.
