Track & Field Places Fifth At BGSU Challenge

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - - Behind first-place efforts in two of 16 events, the Ball State indoor track & field team scored 58 total points to place fifth among seven teams at the 2011 BGSU Challenge hosted at Bowling Green's Perry Field House.
Western Michigan won the seven-team meet with 168 points, followed by Dayton (148), host Bowling Green (118), Miami (112), BSU, Spring Arbor (6) and IPFW (5).
Senior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) scored the Cardinals' first event victory of the day, posting a distance of 18-10.5 to win the long jump by 4.75 inches and earn 10 points for BSU
The Cardinals second victory came in the high jump, with freshman Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport H.S.) turned in a leap of 5-5, two inches higher than the second-place finisher. The effort pulled in 10 more points for the Cardinals.
Junior Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) was BSU's top overall scorer, picking up 11 points with a third-place effort in the 200m dash (25.93) and a fourth-place showing in the 60m dash (7.87).
Sophomore Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) netted eight points for BSU, placing second in the 500m run with a clocking of 1:19.02.
Senior Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) rounded out BSU's top-three performers with a third-place time of 9.00 in the 60m hurdles.
Overall, the Cardinals scored points in 10 of the 16 events.
The Ball State indoor track & field team continues its 2011 season next Friday, when it travels to Bloomington, Ind., for the two-day Gladstine Invitational.
