DEKALB, Ill. - The Ball State soccer team dropped its first overtime game of the season Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals dropped a 1-0 decision at Mid-American Conference West Division foe Northern Illinois. The loss drops the Cardinals to 6-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in MAC play while the Huskies improve to 5-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in league action.
The two teams played an even contest throughout regulation as both posted 12 shots during the first 90 minutes. Sophomore forward Paige Stroinski (Granger, Ind./Penn) was the offensive catalyst for the Cardinals as she tallied a game-high six shots while NIU was paced by Shelbi Johnson's team-high four shots.
Northern Illinois scored the game's lone goal in the 95th minute as it was rewarded its sixth corner kick of the afternoon. Megan Harry took the kick and sent the ball towards the back post where Kylie Revelle was able to get a head on it and blast past sophomore goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler (Waukesha, Wis./UT-Martin) for the game-winning tally.
Buehler posted five saves in the loss for the Cardinals who have dropped back-to-back games for the second time this season. NIU goalkeeper Amy Carr posted two saves to record her third shutout in the past four games.
Ball State returns to action next Friday night as it begins a two-game road MAC weekend. The Cardinals will face Akron Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. and Ohio Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
