AKRON, Ohio - The Ball State soccer team suffered its third straight loss Friday evening as the Cardinals dropped a 3-1 decision at Mid-American Conference foe Akron at Lee Jackson Field. The loss drops the Cardinals to 6-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in MAC play while Akron improves to 3-7-0 on the year and 1-2-0 in league action.
Akron opened the scoring quickly as the Zips scored in the ninth minute of play. Ashley Hughes took a pass from Jordan Clark and beat sophomore goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler (Waukesha, Wis./UT-Martin) from 16 yards out for the early 1-0 lead. The Zips added a second goal in the 21st minute as Jordan Baranowski ripped a shot from 20 yards out.
The Cardinals rebounded from the slow start and cut the deficit in half just 1:46 later as their aggressive play drew a corner kick. Ball State sent the ball through the box where freshman Robyn Miley (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) was able to win the loose ball and sent it back across the box.
Sophomore defender Brigit Reder (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) ran onto the end of the cross and tapped it into the back of the net past Akron goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert. The goal was the first of the season for Reder and just the second tally of her career.
Akron started the second half as quickly as the first as the Zips re-took their two-goal lead just three-plus minutes into the half in the 49th minute. Rachel Clark gave Akron a 3-1 lead as she scored off of a restart from 10 yards out to beat freshman goalkeeper Layne Schramm (The Colony, Texas/The Colony).
Ball State out-shot the Zips 8-5 in the loss with eight different players recording a shot for the Cardinals. Buehler posted two saves in the loss while playing the first half while Schramm played the second half without a save. Wolbert tallied three saves in the victory for Akron.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday afternoon as they travel to Athens, Ohio to take on the Ohio Bobcats at 1 p.m.
