September 26, 2010 | Football
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Ball State University football team (1-3, 0-0 MAC) lost to No. 18 Iowa (3-1, 0-0 Big Ten) by a score of 45-0 Saturday afternoon at Kinnick Stadium.
"Iowa is really well-coached," Ball State head coach Stan Parrish says. "They have the ability to run the football and their quarterback did really good. They are a very, very complete football team. They are a physical midwestern team that plays football the way you are supposed to play football."
Iowa scored on its second possession of the game to take the early 7-0 edge over Ball State after running back Adam Robinson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:34 remaining in the first quarter.
Defensively, the Cardinals limited Iowa to only seven first quarter points behind the play of Travis Freeman, who tallied seven tackles, while teammate Tony Martin managed six tackles.
With 5:40 remaining in the first half, the Hawkeyes increased their lead to 14-0 after quarterback Ricky Stanzi completed an 8-yard pass to wide receiver Keenan Davis. Iowa would then go up 21-0 after Stanzi connected on a 22-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver D. Johnson-Koulianos with 1:54 remaining in the second quarter.
Ball State did not score on its next possession given the ball back to the Hawkeyes. Iowa would then fumble the ball on its own 32-yard line where Martin recovered it for the Cardinals with 49 seconds left to play in the half. The fumble recovery was Martin's first of the season and second of his career.
Iowa scored on back-to-back possessions increasing its lead to 35-0 with 2:56 to play in the third quarter. The Hawkeyes would score another touchdown and make a field goal to go up 45-0 in the fourth quarter.
"We came in here and played hard, but we got discouraged. They wear you down. It was a tough day. We played without two of our starting offensive lineman. It would have been difficult with those guys, let alone without them."
The Ball State football team will open Mid-American Conference play on the road at Central Michigan Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
