Softball Raises $1,400 For Local Cancer Agency, Little Red Door
May 27, 2010 | Softball
"Our goal was to raise $1,000 for Little Red Door," says senior pitcher and the team's Think Pink coordinator, Elizabeth Milian. "So, to have surpassed that number is something the team is really proud of. It's awesome to be able to give back to the Muncie community, which has been a home away from home for me and my teammates."
The bulk of the money was raised through an online auction which ran on www.ballstatesports.com April 9 and ended April 25 following Ball State's Think Pink game against Toledo at the BSU Softball Complex. The Cardinals wore pink jerseys, pink socks and pink ribbons to support breast cancer awareness at the game.
Auction items included the pink jerseys worn by the Ball State players in the Think Pink game, which were purchased by donations made by US Bank and Jackie Durment's parents; an autographed photo of Jennie Finch, provided by USA Softball; and three Vera Bradley bags, courtesy of Very Bradley, Inc.
Additional funds were raised at the game by selling pink flower leis courtesy of Ball State Athletics and baked goods made by the team.
"I'm very impressed by the amount of attention that was given to this effort by everyone on the team, including parents and fans," says Ball State head softball coach Craig Nicholson. "The Muncie community is good to us and it feels good to be able to give back."
One hundred percent of the money raised in the auction and from game day sales was donated to Little Red Door - a local agency founded in 1954 that is not affiliated with nor receives funding from the American Cancer Society or any other agency.
