Softball Notches 13-0 Five-Inning Shutout At Western Michigan
May 01, 2010 | Softball
Elizabeth Milian (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) is credited with the shutout - her eighth this season - and allowed just three hits in the game, while striking out eight. With the win, Milian, now 25-5, surpasses Bernie Coffman (1986-89) as Ball State's career leader in the category and owns 78 wins in four years as the Cardinals' ace.
By hitting her 15th double of the season, Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) also set a school record and is now Ball State's single season leader in doubles.
Jessie Ware (Phoenix, Ariz./Hamilton) who hit for the cycle against Northern Illinois Friday, opened play for the Cardinals with her 13th triple of the season. The redshirt senior would be thrown out at home on the next play and the Broncos held the Ball State offense to zero runs in the first inning.
Ball State broke through in the top of the second, scoring eight runs on seven hits and three walks. The drive began with a lead-off triple compliments of Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana). Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon), who led the Cardinals' batting line-up hitting three-for-four in the game, drove in Carpenter on the next play with a single up the middle. Then, Montalto hit her record-setting double to drive in Collins and Kate Wilczynski (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) who was walked. Hannah Zimmerman (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial) followed with a bunt to load the bases. Carpenter, Collins and Wilczynski, each at bat for the second time in the inning, would combine for four RBI and three hits in their second at bat.
The Broncos notched their first hit of the game in the bottom of the second when Meredith Whitney singled up the middle. Milian escaped with the bases loaded by striking out Kayla Houston.
Meredith Nash (Peculiar, Mo./Raymore-Peculiar) scored the lone run of the third inning on a throwing error by the catcher who was attempting to throw out Ware at first.
Ball State's offense scored its final runs in the top of the fourth, beginning with a triple by Nash that drove in Wilczynski and Montalto. Then, Kristy Stratton (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw), pinch hitting for Zimmerman, singled to drive in Nash. Ware and Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Alonso) followed Stratton by singles of their own, and Rozanski's hit drove in Zimmerman who reentered for Stratton.
The Cardinals offense saw all three Western Michigan pitchers throughout the game, but Whitney was credited with the loss and is 8-10 overall.
Ball State returns to Fran Ebert Field Sunday at 1 p.m. to close out the two-game weekend series against Western Michigan. Live stats will be available on www.ballstatesports.com and inning-by-inning updates provided by @BallStSoftball on Twitter.
