April 30, 2010 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's outdoor track and field team continues its march towards the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday, when it travels to Terre Haute, Ind., for the 2010 Pacesetter Invitational hosted by Indiana State University. Action in the meet begins at 9 a.m. with the hammer throw.
Heading into the weekend, several Cardinals will look to build upon season-best efforts they posted last weekend at the Stan Lyons Invitational, where BSU captured four event victories.
One of those event wins came in the 400m hurdles, when senior Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) posted a career-fast clocking of 1:01.91. The effort currently ranks her fifth among MAC athletes in the event.
A pair of Cardinals excelled in the 400m dash, as both sophomore transfer Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.) and freshman Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) posted BSU career-best efforts in the event. Owsley's clocking of 56.54 ranks eighth in the conference, while Smith's time of 56.83 is 15th.
Another freshman broke into the league-rankings in the 800m run, as MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) crossed the finish line in 2:18.94 to grab the No. 20 slot.
In the field events, redshirt sophomore Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, German) and junior Megan Cherry (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) each collected season-best efforts jumping events. Lorenz posted a season-best leap of 19-1.5 (5.83m) in the long jump, while Cherry added a career-best triple jump of 36-6.25 (11.13m). The efforts rank ninth and 19th in the league, respectively.
Entering Saturday's Pacesetter Invitational, the Cardinals have 11 different student-athletes ranked in the top 20 in the league rankings in their respective events.
