Weather Limits Track & Field At Mike Poehlein Invitational
April 03, 2010 | Track & Field
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - Battling the elements throughout the day, the Ball State women's track & field team saw limited action at the non-scored Mike Poehlein Invitational hosted by Purdue. The wet and windy Indiana weather limited BSU's student-athletes to six of the day's 20 overall events.
In addition to the Cardinals, teams represented at the meet included host Purdue, Illinois, Notre Dame, Louisville, Indiana, Indiana Tech, Bethel, Marion, Butler, Indianapolis, Olivet Nazarene, Loyola, DePaul, IPFW, Illinois-Chicago and St. Joseph's
In the events the Cardinals competed in, senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) led the squad with a fifth-place finish in the 100m hurdles, clocking in at 14.31. Redshirt sophomore Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) also posted a top 10 effort in the event, placing 10th with a time of 14.88.
Five runners finished in the top 20 for Ball State in the 400m dash, led by a sixth-place showing from freshman Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain Ohio), who crossed the line in 57.98. Also placing in the top 10 in the event for the Cardinals were sophomore Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.) and senior Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) with times of 57.98 (eighth) and 58.77 (ninth), respectively.
Ball State's only other track event was the 1,500m run, where freshman Emilee Zets (Berlin Center, Ohio/West Branch H.S.) placed 42nd (5:19.20) and sophomore Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) finished 45th (5:22.16).
In the field events, senior Tyra Schantz (Bloomfield, Ind./White River Valley H.S.) and junior Jordan Puckett (Washington, Ind./Washington H.S.) both competed in Friday's hammer throw, with Schantz placing ninth (146-06/44.66m) and Puckett earning 19th (138-06/42.23m).
In the shot put, Lorenz posted a toss of 37-5.25 (11.41m) to place 15th. Schantz also attempted to compete in the discus, but did not complete a toss.
