Track & Field Ties For Third At Miami Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio - - Behind 20 top 10 performances, the Ball State women's outdoor track and field team scored 88 points to tie for third among 15 teams at the two-day Miami Invitational at George L. Rider Track in Oxford, Ohio.
Mid-American Conference rival and host Miami won the meet with 188 points, followed by Hillsdale (98) in second, Ball State (88) and Grand Valley State (88) in third and Wright State (56) rounded out the top five. The rest of the field in order included Dayton (55), Butler (40), Kentucky State (34), Cedarville (21.50), Xavier (20), Findlay (13), Valparaiso (12), Tiffin (11.50), Central State (8) and Rio Grande (4).
Redshirt sophomore Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) was the Cardinals' top performer at the meet, logging a team-high 30 points, including 10 for a first-place and season-best leap of 18-9.75 (5.73m) in the long jump. Lorenz also placed second with a season-best javelin throw (126-4/38.51m), fifth with a season-fast 100m hurdles (14.85) time, ninth in the high jump (4-11.75/1.52m) and 13th in the 200m dash (26.17) to add 12 more individual points.
Lorenz's final eight points of the meet came in the 4x400m relay when she ran the second leg for the second-place squad which crossed the finish line in 3:50.40. She was joined in the race by senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.), sophomore Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.) and senior Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.).
The 400m dash was the Cardinals top event at the meet, with three runners finishing in the top six to earn 17 points from the race. Owsley placed second in the race with a season-fast time of 57.31 (8pts), while freshman Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) finished third at 57.65 (6pts). Schmitmeyer rounded out BSU's scores in the race, placing sixth in a season-fast 58.19 to pick up three points.
Schmitmeyer went on to add a second-place effort in the 400m hurdles, posting a season-fast time of 1:03.12 to add eight more points to her final tally of 19. Johnson rounded out BSU's top three performers with a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles (14.50/6pts). Johnson would also finish the meet with 19 points after placing fourth with the 4x100m relay (48.55/5pts) and placing 15th in the 100m dash (12.72).
The Ball State track & field team will look to build on its strong weekend performances when it returns to action next Friday at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational hosted by Louisville.
