Women's Golf Rewarded at MAC Championships
April 25, 2010 | Women's Golf
Ball State was well represented at the awards presentations after the 2010 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships.
Katherine Mowat was named the league's Coach of the Year, and Kirsty O'Connor was selected the Sportswoman of the Year. Brittany Kelly was named to the All-MAC First Team and Rachael Pruett joined Kelly on the all-tourney team.
Mowat is the first Ball State women's golf coach to earn the award, and received it after leading the Cardinals to a school-best second-place finish at the 2010 MAC Championships. Mowat's team has won eight tournament titles in the last three seasons.
O'Connor was named the Sportswoman of the Year, which is voted on by the student-athletes competing at the MAC Championships and recognizes the player whom other players most enjoy playing or conversing with, has good rapport with her own team, is supportive of her own team but respects the competition. The winner of this award also commands respect and esteem and is considered worthy of representing intercollegiate golf to others. O'Connor is the first Ball State student-athlete to ever receive the award.
Kelly, who was named to the All-MAC Second Team in 2009, was named to the first team at the 2010 MAC Championships after finishing second with a 76-74-71=221. She finished three strokes behind Kent State's Martina Gavier's 218. Kelly's final round 71 was the low final round of the tournament. Her second place finish at the MAC Championships is the second best in Ball State history behind only Katie Sundberg's medalist performance in 2005. Kelly's second place finish was her best of the season, topping her third place showing at the UNLV Rebel Spring Invitational March 8-10. Kelly is only the second female golfer in Ball State history to make the All-MAC First Team, joining Sundberg in 2005.
Rachael Pruett and Kelly were named to the MAC All-Tournament Team after their performances at the 2010 league championships. Pruett finished fifth with a 72-73-79=224
