Softball Defeats Toledo 10-1 In Five Innings Saturday
April 24, 2010 | Softball
Four Ball State batters tallied multi-hit games including Jessie Ware (Phoenix, Ariz./Hamilton), Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Alonso), Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) and Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon). Collins leads the Cardinals with 17 multi-hit games this season.
Ball State took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Cardinals first run was scored by Ware who was driven in by Rozanski's first triple of the day, hit just out of reach of the left fielder's glove. Rozanski was the next to score, driven in by Alicia Barkley's (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City) double down the right field line. Next up, Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly to right field that advanced Barkley to third. Collins grounded out to the second baseman on the next play to drive in Rozanski and tally her first RBI of the game.
The Cardinals would score seven more runs in the second inning beginning with Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) reaching on an error by Toledo's left fielder which also advanced her to second. Then, Meredith Nash (Peculiar, Mo./Raymore-Peculiar) drew the only walk of the game and Hannah Zimmerman (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial) entered to pinch run for Montalto. With two runners on base, Ware doubled to left field tallying two RBI on the hit. Then, Rozanski slugged her second triple of the game and fourth this season to score Ware. Barkley followed and reached first on an error by the second baseman which scored Rozanski.
With Ball State leading 7-0, Toledo went to their bullpen and brought in Whitney Young to replace Hannah Rockhold in the circle. The Cardinals would score three more runs this inning on Young.
Elizabeth Milian (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) was on the mound for the Cardinals and recorded three strikeouts while giving up just one run and four hits. Milian's 23-5 overall record leads the MAC and today's win marks the 76th of her career. The ace needs just one win to tie Bernie Coffman as the Ball State's career leader in the category.
