MUNCIE, Ind. - As classes near a close and finals begin at Ball State University over the next two weeks, many students find their time focused on papers, projects and studying.
For Ball State student-athlete Lee Meyer, this trend is certainly no different.
However, as a student in BSU's nationally-recognized architecture program and the leading attacker on the Cardinals' 13th-ranked men's volleyball team, Meyer's daily commitment to academics and volleyball are unlike any other student. The 6-foot-7 junior from Cincinnati averages four hours of sleep each night.
"I took it as a personal challenge," Meyer said. "I knew in my heart architecture was the perfect melting of art and mathematics, which were my two strong points in high school. A lot of students tend to pride themselves on the lack of sleep they get. It's probably about four hours a night for me."
Meyer enters the 2010 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament with a team-best 263 kills.
"I see Lee as someone who really gets it," BSU head coach Joel Walton said. "He has his priorities in place. Lee is here for academics and volleyball is kind of the extra benefit or the added bonus, and I am ok with that. He's going to benefit in life because of this experience."
The Cardinals host IPFW at 7:30 p.m Saturday in Worthen Arena. Three wins in the tournament will advance Ball State into the NCAA Tournament for a 16th time in school history.
