Softball Hosts Online Auction To Support Local Cancer Agency
April 21, 2010 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. - To raise awareness of cancer, the Ball State softball team is hosting an online auction which ends Sunday after the Cardinals 1 p.m. Think Pink game against Toledo at the BSU Softball Complex. Players will be wearing pink jerseys, pink socks and pink ribbons to support breast cancer awareness at the game and will donate all money raised in the online auction to Cancer Services of East Central Indiana, Inc.-Little Red Door.
"This is our way of raising awareness of an issue that affects all of us in some way," Ball State's ace pitcher and the team's Think Pink coordinator, Elizabeth Milian said. "We're proud to be giving back to the Muncie community, which has been a home away from home for me and my teammates, and we're really looking forward to wearing pink on game day."
Opened April 9, auction items include pink game jerseys to be worn in the Think Pink game. The jerseys were purchased by donations made by US Bank and Jackie Durment's parents and bidding begins at $35 per jersey and increases by increments of $2.50.
Other auction items include an autographed photo of Jenny Finch, provided by USA Softball, which is starting at $25, and three Vera Bradley bags, courtesy of Very Bradley, Inc. The starting prices for the bags are as follows: Take Me With You Tote, $68; Betsy Style Handbag, $45; and Taxi Wallet, $25.
The Cardinals will also be selling pink flower leis for $1 at the Think Pink game, courtesy of Ball State Athletics, and hope to reach at least $100 in donations from the leis.
"Cancer is something that impacts everyone in the Muncie community, everyone in the softball community and everyone in the world," Ball State Head Coach Craig Nicholson said. "Our goal is to have everyone in the stands wearing a lei to signify their support for Little Red Door and the Ball State softball team."
One hundred percent of the money raised in the auction and from the lei sale will be donated to Little Red Door - a local agency founded in 1954 that is not affiliated with nor receives funding from the American Cancer Society or any other agency.
"We are thrilled to be partnering with Ball State Athletics in its Think Pink game," Little Red Door's Education and Client Services Coordinator Cheryl Mathews said. "We appreciate the Ball State softball team's efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds for our agency's "Reaching Out" breast health program, which is committed to ensuring that no woman in Delaware County goes without access to vital breast health education and screening services. "
Join the Ball State softball team in raising awareness for breast cancer and supporting Little Red Door by participating in the auction and attending the Think Pink game Sunday at the BSU Softball Complex.
