MUNCIE, Ind. - - After a strong all-around performance last weekend, the Ball State women's outdoor track & field team returns to action Friday, when it travels to Louisville, Ky., for the 2010 Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational. Perhaps the brightest spot from last weekend's Miami Invitational was the return of senior distance specialist Ali Bishel (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.), who placed third in the 5,000m run with a time of 17:27.32. The effort currently ranks second in the Mid-American Conference entering the weekend. After placing 67th at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championships last fall, Bishel was forced to miss the 2010 indoor track & field season due to injury.
Also turning in a solid performance at the Miami Invitational was redshirt sophomore Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany), who competed in six events for the Cardinals. Lorenz scored Ball State's lone event victory at the meet, taking first place in the long jump with a distance of 18-9.75 (5.73m). She also placed second in the javelin throw (126-4/38.51m), fifth in the 100m hurdles (14.85), ninth in the high jump (4-11.75/1.52m) and 13th in the 200m dash (26.17).
In the throws, senior Tyra Schantz (Bloomfield, Ind./White River Valley H.S.) posted a career-best hammer throw distance of 155-6 to place eighth at the meet. The effort also ranks 13th among all MAC throwers. Schantz also placed ninth in the discus at the Miami Invitational with another career-best effort of 129-10.
Entering Friday's meet, 12 different Ball State student-athletes rank in the top 20 in the MAC rankings in their respective events. Bishel is BSU's top-ranked athlete, holding the No. 2 slot in the 5,000m run. Lorenz is the most-ranked BSU athlete, holding spots in the javelin (3rd), long jump (4th), 100m hurdles (13th) and high jump (16th). Lorenz also ran a leg for the fifth-ranked 4x400m relay.
