Softball Picks Up 3-1 Win Against Eastern Michigan Saturday
April 10, 2010 | Softball
The Eastern Michigan offense was unable to overcome the strength of the Ball State defense, as the Eagles scored their only run of the game on a home run by Courtney Nicholson in the first inning. Between eight strike outs courtesy of Elizabeth Milian and 21 putouts in the field, only four Eastern Michigan batters made it on base.
Amassing 603 strike outs throughout her career at Ball State, Milian needs just 12 more to surpass Ball State's career strikeout leader, Bernie Coffman (1986-89). Also, with a 17-2 record this season, she needs seven wins to surpass Coffman as the school's all-time career leader in this category as well.
The Cardinals scored two of their three total runs in the second inning when Kristy Stratton (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw) advanced to second on a single and then to third on an error by Eastern's centerfielder, Jenny Scherer. Stratton's crucial single, which drive in both Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) and Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde), was hit with two outs in the inning.
Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Alonso) is credited with the Cardinals third run of the game, which she earned by stealing home with Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) at bat. The junior leads the team with 17 stolen bases this season and is Ball State's career leader with 94 in three years.
The Cardinals amassed five hits, remained perfect in the field and left four runners on base.
Ball State faces Eastern Michigan Sunday at 1 p.m. in the final of the two-game weekend series at the BSU Softball Complex. Live stats and audio will be provided on www.ballstatesports.com. Also, inning-by-inning updates are available courtesy of @BallStSoftball on Twitter.
