Men's Tennis Scores Pair Of Saturday Wins

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State men's tennis team scored a 7-0 sweep of in-state rival IUPUI Saturday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. In the evening, the Cardinals added a 6-1 victory over Detroit Mercy. With the two wins, the Cardinals improve to 8-3 on the year.
In the afternoon match versus IUPUI, the Cardinals jumped out to an early one-point advantage thanks to all three doubles teams scoring wins. In No. 1 doubles, Eduardo Pavia and Dalton Albertin paved the way for the doubles point with an 8-2 win over the Jaguars Bren Vasalakis and Jorge Yunes.
In singles action, Anders Monroy jumped up to the Cardinals' No. 1 slot and scored a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 win over IUPUI's top player Deon Shafer. Ball State then went on to sweep the final five singles matches with Alex Brym winning at No. 2, Dalton Albertin winning at No. 3, Austin Sansone collecting a victory at No. 4, Shaun Bussert posting a win at No. 5 and Zane Smith completing the sweep with a victory in the No. 6 slot.
In the night cap, the Cardinals once again cruised through doubles, as the No. 2 team of Monroy and Smith and the No. 3 team of Cliff Morrison and Derek Carpenter each scored 8-2 victories to secure the double points. Pavia and Albertin would also win a much tougher match in the No. 1 doubles slot, scoring an 8-6 victory.
In singles action, Pavia battles Detroit's Pjotrs Necajevs through the closest battle of the day, posting a hard-earned 6-2, 3-6 (10-7) victory. Also scoring singles wins versus Detroit for the Cardinals were Morrison (No. 2), Brym (No. 4), Albertin (No. 5) and Bussert (No. 6).
The Ball State men's tennis team returns to action March 11, with a 2 p.m. match versus Weber State in Las Vegas, Nevada.
