Women's Basketball Posts 66-52 Win at Valpo

VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Ball State University women's basketball team (3-2) earned its first road victory of the season Wednesday night after defeating in-state rival Valparaiso (1-3) 66-52 at the Athletics Recreation Center.
Emily Maggert led all scorers offensively and defensively after a 19 point performance while bringing down 13 boards. Maggert's double-double performance was her 25th of her career and third of the season. Benning was the only other Cardinals to score in double figures after chipping in 13 on the night. BSU's bench added 21 points to the victory with Ebony Jackson leading the way with eight.
With Maggert's 19-point performance tonight she moves into eighth all-time on the Ball State women's basketball all-time scoring list with 1,349 career points passing former Cardinal Jaimie Lehotsky (1994-97) who had 1,346.
Another strong performance from the Cardinals defensively as they out rebounded the Crusaders 50-to-41.
The Cardinals came out of the gates strong in the second half scoring four straight unanswered points to go up by six (34-28) with just seconds off the clock. Ball State continued to control the game, after a trey from Mercedes Miller with 8:08 remaining, the Cardinals went up 50-38 over Valpo.
The Crusaders built an early 7-0 edge at the start of the game over Ball State. Amber Crago knocked down a free throw to put the Cardinals on the board at the 15:40 mark. Ball State then went a 7-0 run of its own trailing the Crusaders by only one, 9-8, with 13:35 to play in the half after Ebony Jackson's three pointer. A few minutes later Ty'Ronda Benning managed a jumper in the paint to give BSU its first lead of the ball game 12-11 at the 12 minute mark.
Ball State then trailed by as many as six (26-20) with 4:37 left in the first period. A combination of free throws made by Brandy Woody who was 4-for-4 at line and Ebony Jackson along with a trey from Maggert and a field goal from Benning gave the Cardinals the 30-28 advantage over the Crusaders at intermission.
