MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team opens its 2010-11 Mid-American Conference slate this weekend, when it travels to Ypsilanti, Mich., to battle Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m.
The Cardinals are coming off their second dual meet victory of the season after posting a 124-65 victory at Eastern Illinois last Sunday, moving their dual record to 2-0 on the year. The Eagles open their 2010-11 campaign Friday, when they host MAC foe Ohio before battling BSU.
The Cardinals, who are traveling to EMU's Jones Natatorium for the second straight season, suffered a 155.5 -133.5 setback at Eastern Michigan in a Jan. 24 dual meet last season. Despite the loss, the Cardinals score first-place efforts in five of the 16 events on the day.
Entering Saturday's meet, the Cardinals have swimmers ranked in the Top 10 in the MAC Rankings in 12 events.
Freshman Bridgette Ruehl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell H.S.) is BSU's top-ranked swimmer, ranking second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.21) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.18).
Fellow freshman Mallory Miles (Holland, Ind./Southridge H.S.) also hold a No. 2 ranking among conference swimmers in the 100 backstroke (59.02), while ranking 10th in the 200 backstroke (2:10.93). In all, five of BSU's freshman hold Top 10 rankings in the league so far this season.
Leading BSU's upperclassmen is senior butterfly specialist Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper H.S.), who holds the No. 3 slot in the 200 butterfly (2:07.14) and is fifth in the 100 fly (57.97)
