October 03, 2010 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State soccer team wrapped up a Mid-American Conference weekend Sunday afternoon with a hard fought 1-0 loss at league foe Ohio at Chessa field. The loss drops the Cardinals to 6-6-0 on the year and 0-4-0 in league play after concluding a stretch of nine road games in the past 10 games.
Ohio (4-5-2, 1-2-1) scored the game's lone goal just 7:51 into the contest. Toye Famodu found Ohio forward Erin Schwenke in behind the Cardinals' defense. Schwenke was able to beat sophomore goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler (Waukesha, Wis./UT-Martin) on the breakaway for the early 1-0 Ohio lead.
The Cardinals had a chance in the closing minutes of the first half to tie the game in the 42nd minute. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Orisich (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) found some space and ripped a shot from 12 yards out but Ohio goalkeeper Mattie Liston was able to notch the save to keep the Cardinals off the board.
Ball State and Ohio were evenly matched for most of the game with the Bobcats holding a slim 7-5 advantage in shots while BSU held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. The Cardinals' final chance came in the 83rd minute of play as redshirt sophomore Abby Milillo (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) was able to get a shot off but Liston made her fourth save of the afternoon to preserve the victory.
Ball State finally returns home to the BSU Soccer Field next weekend as it hosts a pair of games in Muncie. The Cardinals will welcome in rival Miami Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. and host Bowling Green Sunday at 1 p.m. with senior day festivities prior to Sunday's contest against the Falcons.
