Track & Field Scores Eight Wins At IWU Invitational

MARION, Ind. - - Behind a three of first-place finishes from sophomore Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.), the Ball State women's indoor track & field team scored a total of eight event wins at Saturday's Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational, which was a non-scored event at the IWU Indoor Sports Complex.
Taylor scored event wins in the 60m (7.77) and 200m dash (25.64) and also ran the anchor leg for the first-place 4x200 relay which clocked in a 1:44.33. She was joined on the relay by Erica Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.), Sharise Logwood (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central H.S.) and Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.).
Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.) captured the top spot in the 400m dash with a time of 58.28, while Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) placed third with a time of 59.53.
Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) was BSU's lone competitor in the 600m run, coming through with a second-place time of 1:36.91.
MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) posted the fastest time in the mile, at 5:16.17, while Brittany Ade (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger H.S.) crossed the finish line in third at 5:20.88.
BSU's top event of the day was the 60m hurdles, where the team's runners claimed the top three spots. Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) won the race in 8.67, while Marable placed second (8.80) and Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) took third (9.20).
The Cardinals final track victory came in the distance medley relay, when Ade, Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.), Talhelm and Vanessa Gilbert (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont H.S.) combined for a time of 12:22.81.
In the field events, Megan Cherry (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) and Alyssa Hurlburt (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North H.S.) combined for a 1-2 finish in the triple jump, with Cherry posting a leap of 35-00.50 and Hurlburt jumping 34-01.25. Tyra Schantz (Bloomfield, Ind./White River Valley H.S.) added a second-place effort (51-03.50) in the weight throw to round out BSU's top three individual finishers.
The Ball State women's indoor track & field team returns to action Feb. 5-6, when it competes in the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.

MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's indoor track & field team will travel to Marion, Ind., Saturday to compete in the Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational which starts at noon at the IWU Indoor Sports Complex.
The first field event will be the women's shot put starting at noon, while the first track event will be the women's distance medley race beginning at 12:30 p.m. In addition to BSU and IWU, Anderson, Bethel College (Ind.), Defiance, Grace, Hillsdale, Indianapolis, St. Joseph's and St. Mary's are scheduled to compete in the meet. Saturday's meet will mark the second straight season BSU has competed in the IWU Invitational. At the 2009 event, the Cardinals scored nine total event wins, while setting IWU Indoor Sports Complex records in four events.
Last weekend, the Cardinals turned in a solid showing at the 2010 Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana University. During the two-day, non-scored meet, the Cardinals posted 15 top five finishes including a 3-4-5 effort in the 60m dash.
Junior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) was one of Ball State's top individual performers at the meet, earning fourth place in the pentathlon (3614) and fifth in the long jump (18-7 ½). In the pentathlon events, Lorenz placed 2nd in the long jump (18-10), 4th in the 60m hurdles (9.13), 4th in the shot put (35-8.5), 4th in the 800m run (2:27.12) and 6th in the high jump (4-11.75).
On the track, sophomore Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) was BSU's top sprinter, clocking in at 7.87 in the 60m dash to place third. She also placed fifth in the 200m dash invitational race, posting a BSU season-fast time of 25.47.
After the first two meets of the season, 10 of BSU's student-athletes rank in the top 20 in the Mid-American Conference rankings, along with one relay squad.
