Women's Swimming & Diving Picks Up Four Wins

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - With 12 first-place finishes, the Ball State women's swimming & diving team scored four dual wins in a five-team meet hosted by Butler Sunday afternoon at North Central High School. The Cardinals posted 833 points to top Youngstown State (493), Eastern Illinois (375), Valparaiso (271) and Butler (139).
The Cardinals, who improve to 10-5 on the year with the four wins, opened the meet by taking top billing in the 200 medley relay. Junior Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.), senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.), junior Alanna Bader (Monroe, Wis./Monroe H.S.) and junior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.) combined to win the event with a time of 1:49.31.
Karwoski, who was returning to her high school pool, also collected a victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.26) and placed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.12).
Ball State's top winners on the day were Bader, Bylsma and freshman Jillian Bischoff (Atlanta, Ind./Hamilton Heights H.S.) who collected three wins apiece.
In addition to swimming the third leg for the first-place 200 medley relay, Bader captured individual event wins in the 200 butterfly (2:08.59) and the 200 individual medley (2:12.32).
Bylsma swam the anchor for both the 200 medley relay and the first-place 400 freestyle relay, while earning an individual win in the 50 freestyle. She also placed second in the 100 butterfly (59.15).
Bischoff, who was also a member of the 400 freestyle relay, earned individual wins in the 100 freestyle (53.87) and the 500 freestyle (5:17.12). The 400 freestyle relay clocked in a 3:36.91, and was also comprised of junior Joan Cullen (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) and Saulters.
On the diving board, senior Lisa Maertin (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way-Central H.S.) led a pair of 1-2-3 efforts for the Cardinals, collecting first-place finishes on the one-meter (250.55) and three-meter (255.60) events.
Also scoring event wins for the Cardinals were senior Mary Ehresman (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) in the 1650 freestyle (18:08.81) and junior Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper H.S.) in the 100 butterfly (58.51).
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to action next Friday, when it hosts Mid-American Conference foe Ohio in a 1 p.m. swim at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
