T&F Scores 15 Top 10 Finishs At Gladstein Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The Ball State women's indoor track & field team completed the second day of competition at the 2010 Gladstein Invitational with 10 top 10 finishes, to conclude the two-day meet at Indiana University with a total of 15.
The meet, which was not scored, saw the Cardinals excel in the 60m dash with three runners placing in the top five. Sophomore Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) was BSU's top sprinter, clocking in at 7.87 to place third. Junior Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) followed in fourth (7.95), while senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) took home fifth (7.96).
Sophomore Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.) opened the second day of competition for Ball State with a ninth-place time of 26.64 in the 200m dash. In the 200m invitational race, Taylor took home fifth with a time of 25.47.
Marable added her second top 10 finish of the afternoon in the 60m hurdles, placing sixth with a clocking of 9.03.
One day after earning fourth in the pentathlon, junior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) continued her strong meet with a fifth-place leap of 18-7.25 in the long jump.
In the 600m run, senior Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) circled the course in 1:38.47, to place 10th.
BSU placed two runners in the top 10 in the 800m run, as sophomore Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) crossed the line in sixth (2:19.35) and junior Brittany Ade (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) placed ninth (2:20.61).
The Cardinals concluded the meet with a sixth-place effort in the 4x400m relay. Freshman Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) led off the relay which finished in 3:53.33. Joining Smith were Lorenz, Schmitmeyer and Owsley.
The Ball State women's indoor track & field team returns to action next Saturday, when it travels to Marion, Ind., for the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational.

DAY ONE RESULTS
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The Ball State women's indoor track & field team claimed five top 10 finishes over six events in the opening day of the 2010 Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana.
Junior Thekla Lorenz opened the day with a fourth-place showing in the pentathlon, racking up 3614 points. Among the pentathlon participants, Lorenz placed 2nd in long jump (18-10), 4th in 60m hurdles (9.13), 4th in shot put (35-8.5), 4th 800m run (2:27.12) and 6th in high jump (4-11.75).
Two events later, junior Megan Cherry placed 10th in the triple jump, leaping for a total of 34-feet and three-and-a-half inches.
Freshman Judah Smith was BSU's top performer on the opening day, placing third in the 400m dash with a time of 58.56. In the 400m dash invitational race, sophomore Renyae Owsley finished in 59.56.
Senior Vanessa Gilbert rounded out BSU's top 10 performers with an eighth-place showing in the 5000m run. She completed the event in 17:52.50.
In preliminary action, three Cardinals advanced to the finals in the 60m dash, as Janae Taylor (7.88), Ra'Jae Marable (7.92) and Katie Johnson (8.00) each finished in the top 16. In the 60m hurdles, both Johnson (8.76) and Marable (8.99) advanced to the finals.

MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's indoor track & field travels to Bloomington, Ind., this weekend for the 2010 Gladstein Invitational. The two-day event begins Friday at noon with the multi-events competition. For a complete schedule and live results, click the links above.
The two-day meet will feature combined events and invitational sections. Invitational races have been grouped together for the ease of spectators. The meet will feature 13 schools, 8 clubs or professional organizations, over 780 athletes and two Beijing Olympians (Hyleas Fountain and Mary Wineberg).
Ball State enters the meet after placing sixth at last weekend's Bowling Green Challenge. The Cardinals scored 45 points at the challenge, with junior multi-event specialist Thekla Lorenz (Hamberg, German) leading the way by winning the long jump. In all, 11 different Cardinals scored at the meet.
After the first meet of the season, seven of BSU's student-athletes rank in the top 20 in the Mid-American Conference rankings, along with one relay squad. Sophomore Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) leads the way, ranking fifth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.82.
