Track & Field Places Sixth At Bowling Green Challenge

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - - The Ball State women's track & field team open its 2010 indoor season with a sixth-place finish at the 10-team Bowling Green Challenge Saturday afternoon at BGSU's Perry Field House. BSU scored 45 total points at the event which featured five teams from the Mid-American Conference.
MAC rival Central Michigan won the meet with 135.5 points, followed by Dayton (129.5), Miami (115.5), Toledo (62), Bowling Green (49), BSU (45), Ohio (42), Oakland (28), Detroit (15) and IPFW (1.5).
Overall, Ball State's student-athletes scored in nine of the meet's 13 events. Junior multi-event specialist Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) was BSU's top performer, winning the long jump with a distance of 18'-8.5" for 10 points, while running the second leg for the sixth-place 4x400m relay that earned three points with a time of 4:03.89.
Freshman Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) led off the 4x400m relay, followed by Lorenz, freshman Erica Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) and sophomore transfer Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.).
Smith also placed fifth in the 400m dash to with a time of 59.30 to add four points to BSU's total. Sophomore Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) also scored in a pair of events for BSU, placing third in the 60m dash (7.82) and eighth in the 200m dash (26.36) for a total of seven points.
A pair of uperclassman also turned in third-place efforts on the day, as senior Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) posted a time of 1:39.74 in the 600m run, while junior Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) clocked an 8.82 in the 60m hurdles.
Also scoring points for the Cardinals were senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) who placed fifth in the 200m dash (26.23), sophomore Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) who came in seventh in the 800m run, freshman Sharise Logwood (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) with a seventh-place showing in the long jump (17') and senior Vanessa Gilbert (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont H.S.) who placed eighth in the mile run (5:14.14).
The Ball State indoor track & field team returns to action next weekend, when it travels to Bloomington, Ind., for the Gladstine Invitational which begins Friday with the weight throw and continues all day Saturday.
