Louisville Tops Women?s Volleyball In Battle Of Cardinals

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State (2-4) women's volleyball team fell to Louisville (4-2) in the championship match of the 2009 Active Ankle Challenge by a score of 3-1 (16-25, 13-25, 25-23, 16-25) Saturday night at Worthen Arena.
In the Challenge's 5 p.m. match, IPFW swept SIU-Edwardsville 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-14).
For their efforts in the two-day tournament Ball State's Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) and Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) were named to the Active Ankle Challenge All-Tournament Team.
Louisville's Lola Arslanbekova was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Lindsey Mango and Justine Landi. IPFW's Rebekah Roehm and SIU-Edwardsville's Sydney Winslow rounded out the all-tournament selections.
In Saturday night's battle of the Cardinals, Ball State was led offensively by Phillips and Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.), who recorded 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) added eight.
Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) directed the Ball State offense to a .192 (44-21-120) attack percentage by handing out 34 assists. She also racked up eight digs and two kills.
Defensively, Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) led BSU with a team-best 10 digs. McGinnis was second in that category, followed by Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) with seven.
U of L's Arslanbekova had a match-high 19 kills while teammate Justine Landi turned in a match-best 13 digs. Overall, Louisville finished the contest with a .327 (52-15-113) attack percentage, while holding a 12 to three advantage in total blocks, including six from Lecia Brown.
Louisville jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the opening frame, but the home squad kept it competitive, notching five of the set's next six point to cut Louisville's lead to 10-8. The run was highlighted by a pair of Breivogel aces.
Ball State trailed by just one at the 15-14 mark, before Louisville scored six unanswered points to pull ahead 21-15. Following a BSU timeout, the home Cardinals managed two more points, but U of L prevailed, handing BSU its first opening-set loss of the tournament.
Set two saw BSU take its first lead of the match at 1-0 on a Phillips kill. With the score tied at 6-6, the visiting Cardinals went on an 8-2 run and slowly pulled away, winning the set 25-13.
The teams competed through a stalemate for the majority of set three, before Ball State broke away after a 19-19 tie. The host Cardinals turned in four straight scores prompting a Louisville timeout. The guests threatened, cutting the home lead to 24-23, before a service error put a 25-23 set win in the BSU column.
BSU's Phillips registered her best performance of the match in set three with seven kills and a .667 attack percentage.
In the fourth and final set, Louisville took advantage of several BSU attack errors to open up a 14-9 lead. Ball State was able to cut the gap to three points on three occasions, including the 16-13 mark, only to see the guest rattle off nine of the final 12 points to win the set 25-16.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Friday when it opens play in the Best Western ISU Classic in Terre Haute, Ind., versus Chicago State at 4 p.m.
